英語は例外が多いとよく言われている。そうかもしれないが、僕は英語のネイティブなので、あまり気づかない。先週、仕事で同僚がexplainを間違えて使った。その間違いについてちょっと考えていて、例外だと気づいた。

まず以下の例文を読んでください：

○　I’ll make you a sandwich.

○　He sent her an email.

○　Give me a minute, please.

×　I’ll explain you the project.

make、send、give、explainは全部相手に対して何かをあげている動詞で、使い方が非常に似ている。普通は動詞+相手（間接目的語）のパターンでいいけど、explainはなぜか分からない以上のパターンで使うと、「あなたを説明する」となってしまう。もちろんHe sent her to her room.やI’ll make you into a princess!などの例も考えられるけど、toやintoがあるから、意味が伝わりやすい。explainは動詞の隣りが直接目的語になる：

○　I’ll explain the project to you.

give、make、sendもこのパターンで使える：

○　I’ll make a sandwich for you.
○　He sent an email to her.

△　Give a minute to me, please.
※文法的に間違ってはいないと思うけど、giveはこのパターンでほとんど使われていない。

○　Tony Soprano gave $1000 to Officer Sullivan so that he would keep quiet.
のほうが自然かな。でもやっぱり、giveだと、give her、give him、give me、give you、give Officer Sullivanのほうが自然だ。

explainは、「explain 何とか to 誰か」のほうがいい。
